Some of my friends might say I tend to be dramatic from time to time. I don't know about all that, but as I've mentioned before, I'm either all in or all out. So post-holidays and the realization that I needed to make some changes, I decided to kick it all off with a juice cleanse. Eric Helms, cofounder of the popular Cooler Cleanse, told me, "For centuries, people have used premium fruit and vegetable juices to maintain and build good health. Today's extremely efficient juicing methods extract the maximum amount of goodness from ripe, organic produce. That makes pressed juice one of nature's most powerful — and delicious — pick-me-ups."

I didn't enter into this cleanse thinking it would be a miracle fix or that I would suddenly lose a ton of weight. Though I'm pretty sure there are quite a few actresses in town trying to de-puff even more as the Oscars approach. For me, it was a way to kick-start a healthier way of eating by going cold turkey off of some of my vices, like sugar. And even more than that, I wanted to test my sheer willpower. And test it I did.

I decided on a three-day cleanse from Pressed Juicery, located in Brentwood (nearby where I live). They delivered my daily drinks the night before (they don't deliver nationally yet but plan to in the future). There were six numbered drinks, including greens, cayenne pepper lemon water, roots and a heavenly almond milk concoction for the end of the day. In addition, there was a chlorophyll water and an aloe vera drink in the evening (to help facilitate clearing you out, if you know what I mean).

Everything was fresh (the juices are pressed daily) and actually tastes good, and you feel like you're literally drinking “health.” I never felt woozy or like I couldn't think straight from lack of solid foods. In fact, I did the entire cleanse during a work week. Now that's not to say that I wasn't hungry, especially from about 12 to 4 p.m., which was the hardest time for me. But more than that, I just missed the act of eating itself. And that's where it really became a mind-over-matter issue.

I did it. I never cheated. All three days. And I did feel really great physically at the end. But even more than that, I knew I could do anything I set my mind to, whether it was not eating from that bread basket or waking up when it was still dark outside to go to the gym. For me, it flipped a mental switch, and I know that I'll be doing it again when I need to remind myself of that.
