This spring, bright flashes of neon aren't relegated to cross-body bags and surf-inspired sportswear. Hot shades of pink, blue and yellow are showing up in makeup, too. While the colors might seem totally intimidating or perhaps just totally '80s, here are eight ways to make them feel fresh.
Shadow Play2 of 9
"Try a bright blue or purple shadow as a liner, but keep the rest of the face natural," says celebrity makeup artist Toby Fleischman. Using a bright eye shadow as a liner gives a subtle pop of color to the eye without the commitment or work it takes to apply it all over the lid.

With hot-pink eye shadow, Fleischman cautions that a little goes along way—too much of the intensely pigmented shade and it could look like you're suffering from spring allergies. Sweep just a very light amount across the lid, using a soft shadow brush, for a subtle effect.

Shocking hues can easily brighten up the eye area, and it's fun to try a twist on your everyday liner. Using a stiff-bristled brush, apply a thin line of this this aqua color as close to your lashline as possible. To avoid color overload, stick to lining your top lids only.

Sunny Side5 of 9
If you're into a yellow that really screams, try this daring hue. Delightfully bright digits can make a breezy white outfit or casual denim look just right for summer. To get your mani to really pop, make sure to apply two coats atop a layer of base coat.

First Blush6 of 9
As with hot pink shadow, the key to bright pink blush is to apply it sparingly. "Used as a sheer wash of color, super-bright pinks and orange can give a fresh glow," says Fleischman. This airy cream-to-powder formula is best applied with fingertips to help the color melt onto your skin.

Purple Reign7 of 9
For the not-so-shrinking violet, this shadow palette is perfect for adding depth and dimension to the eyelid. The purple color is bold without being over-the-top, while the yellow, when applied lightly to the outer corners of the eyes, lets you achieve an edgier look. This shadow formula is versatile—it can be applied dry or with a damp brush for more intense color.

Power Pout8 of 9
"If you're keen to get on the neon bandwagon, opt for a bright punch of pink on the lips," says Fleischman. A matte formula like this one is a good way to ease into the trend without looking like you're on your way to the roller disco. When picking a pink, go for a tone similar to your natural lip color.
