Powder Play1 of 9
By Zoe Schaeffer
All it takes is one traumatic incident—where you end up with Marie Antoinette-white hair—to turn a girl off to dry shampoos. But with the current generation of products (plus an abiding desire to extend the life of a blowout), we were compelled to revisit the issue. We sprayed, sprinkled and brushed on the latest offerings to find out which ones delivered on their promises. Here are the results. (Drumroll, please.)
Brush With Greatness2 of 9
The claim: Available in blond, brunette and white, this brush-on powder blends easily, adds volume at the roots and has a refreshing citrus scent.
Tester's take: "The powder blended in really well without having to fuss too much with it. I was able to still style my hair and it didn't feel all gunky."

Color Me Happy3 of 9
The claim: By offering four different shades to match to your locks, chalky white residue is a non-issue with this powder.
Tester's take: "Because it was an aerosol, it was super easy to apply. I just wasn't sure how much was enough. (Next time, I'll probably spray less.) Afterward, my hair looked less oily and had a nice shine to it. And when I asked others how it looked, no one could tell that I hadn't washed it."
SHOP NOW: Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder, $35
Caviar Dreams4 of 9
The claim: Made with the brand's patented anti-aging caviar extract, this talc-free powder absorbs oil and product build-up, while nourishing hair.
Tester's take: "I loved the smell and silky smooth quality of this powder. Instead of applying directly from the bottle, the trick is to unscrew the cap and pour a little into the palm of your hand. Then, work the powder through your hair with the tips of your fingers."
SHOP NOW: Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Dry Shampoo, $22
Refresher Course5 of 9
The claim: Containing an ultra-fine clay, this transformative dry shampoo preserves color, boosts volume and refreshes hair.
Tester's take: "I brushed my hair and then applied the product liberally, per the can's instruction. I was worried this would ruin my natural curl, but they re-formed nicely afterward and my hair felt really clean, as if the day's oil had just evaporated."
SHOP NOW: Unite 7Seconds Dry, $29
Invisible Touch6 of 9
The claim: With 25 percent less powder than most dry shampoos, this translucent mist is barely visible.
Tester's take: "Amazing! I went three days without washing my hair, which is long and thick. On day three, it still felt clean and was really easy to style. Although the scent of this product is strong, I think it smells great."
SHOP NOW: TIGI Catwalk Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo, $21 (available at select salons)
Turn Up The Volume7 of 9
The claim: Made by J.Lo's mane man, this powerful spray contains patented polymers to soak up oil at the roots and leave you with a just-styled look.
Tester's take: "This works great as a volumizer, ideal for someone with fine strands who wants 'bombshell' hair. And it smells rich, like a $300 haircut."
SHOP NOW: Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, $39
You Say Potato8 of 9
The claim: This powder spray (made with potato starch) creates instant volume while imparting a matte, no-grease finish.
Tester's take: "I was skeptical at first, but this spray is particularly lightweight. It also gives your hair some hold and stiffness—like a light hairspray—which makes styling easier."
SHOP NOW: Sachajuan Volume Powder, $32
Easy Does It9 of 9
The claim: This volume-enhancing dry shampoo creates full hair with a unique collagen technology.
Tester's take: "The product was really easy to apply. All you had to do was spray it in and rustle your hair a bit. Plus, it smells really good. My hair looked clean and felt great, but it only lasted for a couple hours."
