To save or to splurge, that is the question—especially when it comes to beauty products, where the price differences can be dramatic. So we asked celebrity makeup artist and CVS/pharmacy Beauty Board member Mickey Williams to share ten drugstore alternatives to pricey department store products. Read on for her advice.

"Dry shampoo is pretty much the same whether you buy it on a prestige or drugstore level," says Williams. "It's more about placement on the root or strands and making sure to completely brush out the residue. I use it to achieve texture when doing a sexy updo on fine hair, but also to combat limp oily hair. I'm partial to the scent of Dove's—it really stays with hair throughout the day."

"Drugstore lipsticks have come so far in formula, and they have every conceivable shade you can imagine," says Williams. She likes CoverGirl's lipstick in rich red and berry shades for fall. "They make a long-lasting, intense statement with highly pigmented colors that stay in place for hours," she says.

Double Duty4 of 11
An effective combination of CoverGirl's creamy foundation and Olay's hydrating serum, this two-in-one product is perfect if you're always on the go (plus, you won't have to buy a separate foundation and primer). "This full-coverage formula provides a clean look to skin without caking, since the primer is built in to smooth everything out," says Williams.

Brush Over5 of 11
This dual-sided brush takes up less room in your beauty kit and costs a lot less than two high-end brushes would. "The synthetic fiber powder brush applies loose and pressed powder evenly," says Williams. "Then I use the foam blender tip to blend makeup for a natural look."

Nail It6 of 11
"I'm incredibly fickle with nail polishes," says Williams. "One day bright, and the next day neutral. Essie has a color to suit every whim." If you're prone to switching up your shades every few days like Williams, you'll appreciate the bargain prices of Essie's range of polishes.

Garnier's weightless BB cream—which boasts antioxidant-rich vitamin C for a more radiant complexion, as well as hyaluronic acid to help your skin retain moisture—comes in several shades. "It doesn't look oily on skin, so I don't always have to apply powder over it," says Williams.

Curl Power8 of 11
Curling tools tend to cost anywhere from 20 bucks to hundreds of dollars, but for the best value, Williams recommends Conair's mid-price version. "This device is easiest for my clients to curl their hair on their own when I'm not available, and the curls stay in place," she explains. "There's another product like this on the market for professional use, and in my opinion, they work identically."

The New Black9 of 11
"Out of all the luxury and mass beauty brands, L'Oréal Paris voluminous mascara is one of the blackest," says Williams. "It's my top pick to define lashes and maximize length and volume. I've always stocked my kit with it because of the price point—I go through so much of it as a makeup artist."
SHOP NOW: L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Waterproof Mascara, $8, cvs.com
Eye on the Prize10 of 11
Spending tons of money on expensive under-eye treatments is common, but Williams says Lumene's formula is up to par with luxury brands. It's made with a form of resveratrol, an antioxidant found in red wine that provides anti-aging benefits. "This treatment feels great, and absorbs immediately to give the delicate under-eye area a refreshed glow," she says.
SHOP NOW: Lumene Time Freeze Eye Perfecting Treatment, $20, cvs.com
Smooth Operator11 of 11
"Blistex's lip protectant is one item that I always have in my bag and on my lips," says Williams. "It smooths fine lines and provides much-needed hydration. It's also a great lipstick primer."
