You probably spend more time at your desk than anywhere else, so why not let your workspace express your personal style and impress your clients and co-workers? Interior designer Kara Smith, owner of SFA Design, shows us around her office and reveals the best ways to make your space work as hard as you do.
Comfy Seating2 of 8
If you have the space, a small sofa and coffee table will help create a casual and intimate atmosphere for guests. Tend to work mostly alone? It's still helpful to have another sitting area in addition to your desk. It could be just what you need to get a new perspective on that project you've been working on.
Set the Bar3 of 8
Essential for entertaining clients, a chic bar cart doesn't always mean "boys' club" a la Mad Men. It can be reminiscent of old-world glamour, too. A collection of vintage glasses and crystal decanters add a sparkly sophisticated touch whether you use it simply for water or something a little stronger.

Trays on desktops and coffee tables are an easy way to make a hodgepodge of office piles look smart, and organized. Adds Smith, "Desk accessories, particularly in Lucite, let you organize items without overpowering you visually."

Inspiration boards are great tools for organizing your thoughts. Smith wrapped her own oversize framed corkboard in a neutral linen for a more polished look. For an inspiration board of your own skip the boring plastic push pins, in favor of something more fun like these striped fabric alternatives.

As much as we love flowers, they can be expensive to maintain in an office. Instead, Smith suggests a boxwood topiary—prices start around $299 for a live spiral topiary and should last for years. "It's a blend of nature and style with a tailored finish," she says. Added bonus? Indoor plants have been shown to reduce stress and increase productivity—all things we're sure the boss will notice.

"Make art out of great moments in your history, career and life," says Smith. "Frame magazine articles, special awards—these all help tell your story to anyone who walks in." Use the same frame to help unify your articles and make the wall of art appear cohesive and intentional.
Light the Way8 of 8
Overhead office lighting is notoriously bad (studies have attributed migraines to them). Turn off the fluorescents and plug in task and floor lamps.
