The first ten years of the new century brought us the iPod, American Idol, Facebook, Harry Potter and our first black president. In addition, we survived Y2K, Pluto's lost planet status and Tiger Woods' player status. Quite the eventful decade.
Both bitter and sweet, the “Champagne Cocktail” is much like the end of one year and the start of another. Recreated for Glo by Trudy Thomas, the drink dates back to the 1850s, when it was almost exclusively a swig for the wealthy. Now affordable for the average Jane, you'll feel perfectly posh with this sparkling spirit in hand.
Even if your 2011 resolution is to drink less alcohol, we recommend fitting in a few glasses of “Champagne Cocktail” before the ball drops. It's simply too delicious to deny … so much so that after a taste you may rethink that resolution.
1 sugar cube
2- 3 drops of Angostura Bitters
¼ oz Navan Vanilla Cognac
4 oz Gruet Brut NV Sparkling Wine
Directions: Muddle the sugar cube and bitters in a shaker. Add the cognac and then transfer to a flute. Carefully fill to the top with champagne.
