Winter blues got you down? Make it feel like summer by celebrating the Aussie equivalent of the 4th of July, Australia Day. Observed every January 26th, the national holiday commemorates the arrival of the first colonists in 1788. Festivities include fireworks, concerts, barbeques, boat races and a healthy amount of alcohol.
Turn up your heat, turn on some Kylie Minogue, and toss another shrimp on the barbie while you sip on this week's just-for-Glo cocktail, “Strawberry Crush Cosmo,” courtesy of beverage director Trudy Thomas. Succulent berries make this grog (as an Aussie would say) smooth and refreshing. You'll be thinking of sun, sand and Paul Hogan in no time.
When your roommate or significant other complains about the gas bill, pass them a glass of “Strawberry Cosmo Crush,” and we guarantee they'll be raising their own Union Jack in no time.
“Strawberry Crush Cosmo”
1 ½ oz. Ketel One Citroen
¾ oz. Cointreau
¼ oz. fresh lime juice
½ oz. cranberry juice cocktail
1 splash simple syrup (optional)
Directions: Muddle one strawberry and a small splash of simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add remaining ingredients followed by ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Make a vertical slice in the second strawberry so that it can be slid onto the edge of the glass as garnish.
