April Fools' Day is all about unpredictability: The more off-guard you catch your victim, the more successful the prank. In writing this column, we've found that this mantra also applies to cocktails: The more shocking the drink, the more successful it is amongst our readers.
Keeping in that vein, we asked Peter Kasperski, known for crazy cocktail combinations, to create an unpredictable palliative to celebrate this whimsical holiday. The “Meat & Potato Martini” he came up with definitely fits the bill: Atypical ingredients and bold flavors combine to make a cocktail that's sweet, salty, crunchy and kooky.
If you're feeling a bit guilty for putting cellophane over the toilet before your hubbie's morning pee, this manly drink will surely get you off the hook. Pair the “Meat & Potato Martini” with actual meat and potatoes, and he'll be over any April Fools' frustration in no time.
“Meat & Potato Martini”
2 oz. Karlsson's Gold vodka (a Swedish potato vodka)
2 or 3 drops of Worcestershire sauce
2 or 3 drops of Peychaud Bitters
2 or 3 drops of Mezcal
1 strip of bacon (+ some panko)
Directions: Combine all but the last ingredient with ice in shaker, shake vigorously, and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with bacon that has been dredged in panko and deep-fried.
