Your home should be your haven, but certain decor mistakes—like bad lighting or blah colors—can leave you feeling anxious, blue and just plain bored. We called upon interior designer Meg Caswell, from HGTV's Design Star, and psychologist Susan Albers, Psy.D to help diagnose and solve these common issues—no actual therapy needed.

You can't really put your finger on why, but if you feel bored and uninspired, it could be that your surroundings are boring. Caswell says that having too much beige in your home—and not enough color—can put a huge damper on your creativity and overall energy level.

There is a lot of research on the psychology of color and how it makes us feel, Albers says, so she suggests matching the mood you want in a room to the colors you choose. Warm earth tones create a feeling of connection—these are ideal for rooms to sit and socialize. Cool tones such as blues and greens can be calming, making them perfect for the bedroom. Add bright colors in areas you really need an energy boost, like the foyer before you exit the house to start your day.

If you've been tossing and turning trying to get to sleep, it may be time to checkout your mattress and bedding. If you have an old mattress with lackluster springs, your bed is a likely the culprit, Caswell says.

If buying a new bed isn't in the budget, at the very least, get new pillows, Caswell recommends. ("You should change your pillows every two years if not sooner," she says.) Albers also suggests investing in a soft and cozy blanket to wrap up in and moving your television out of the bedroom. "TV lights are stimulating and keep you from sleeping," she says.

A lack of light—whether natural or from a fixture—could be to blame. "Lights set your circadian rhythms which impacts every system in your body—such as how you sleep, when you eat and your overall mood," Albers says.

Albers suggests creating a sunny, happy nook: Place a chair near a window, where you can get some direct sunlight, or buy a sun lamp (a specialty lamp that mimics natural light) and place it next to your favorite chair. Aim to sit in either spot for 30 minutes a day.

Constantly rearranging furniture and feeling unsettled in your space? It could be that you haven't yet defined your space well enough to make your home feel cohesive.

Pay attention to the circulation pattern of the room. "You never want to lay out large pieces of furniture in the way of the natural flow," Caswell says. "Begin with a rug. Most of your furniture should fit on the rug, not around it, which will help the room feel balanced and grounded. Make sure the major seating area is around a focal point, usually the fireplace or TV." Then, keep the clutter at bay. By organizing your surroundings and taking control of your environment, you'll feel more in control, and less stressed, Albers says.
