Give The Most Important Gift Of The Season

As I skim through the many gift guides we're bombarded with during the holidays, what catches my eye are those sections labeled, "What to give the woman who has everything." Well, I've decided that I'm giving everyone who seemingly falls into this rarefied category—and even those who may not—the gift of time for herself.

In this high-stress era, scheduling time for ourselves—and then knowing how to fully enjoy it—is a constant challenge. Even when we make it to that weekly manicure or manage to visit the hairstylist, we're often still busy multitasking and never allow ourselves to really sit back and enjoy it.

A few years ago, my own life was dictated by my to-do list. Of course, I never completed that list, because there were far too many entries ahead of me. By the time the holidays came around, I was in overdrive, storming from one event to the next and running on empty. Then, during the solitude of an early morning, I realized the importance of making myself my biggest priority. Now, I show up on my daily schedule invoking this "gift" in ways great and small—from my morning meditation to my Saturday evening massages—and I am so much richer for it.

Wisdom dictates that time for the self is not an option, but an essential form of self-renewal. Many of us need help and motivating ideas, however, to make it happen. This holiday season, I'm hoping someone will give me a great book I can get lost in, a floral-arrangement lesson, or anything else I can become completely absorbed in. And I'm hoping to give others the same, inspiring them to schedule time for themselves—guilt-free—and to learn to make it non-negotiable. Whether it's an invitation to an afternoon tea, a gift certificate to a new fitness studio, or a monthly massage series, these gifts will not only inspire, but will also last long after they've been unwrapped.

From my heart to yours, happy gifting and happy holidays!
