This week, in honor of Mother's Day, we asked Caroline to share how she would like to spend the holiday, as well as some advice on how to make Mother's Day special for the moms in our lives. Read on for her words of wisdom.
What does Mother's Day mean to me? Hmmm… I'm probably going to get hell for this, but here it goes! I am not that mother who needs flowers and cards and dinner out. Whenever my kids ask me what I want for a holiday or my birthday, my answer is always the same: “Nothing. I have everything I need. I want to see you all smiling and happy.” That's the God's honest truth. There is nothing material you could ever give me to replace a smile on their faces, an I-love-you hug and some time spent together. I know it sounds corny and clichéd, but I'm willing to bet that the majority of moms out there would agree with me.
My point is simply this: If your mother loves flowers and chocolate and wants to be pampered, then by all means, indulge her. Attention comes in all different shapes and sizes. It could be dinner at the finest restaurant with flowers and champagne, it could be a barbecue with the entire family — aunts, uncles, cousins, grandmas and grandpas, for a total family affair — or just a simple card with an “I love you” written inside. You know your mother, and you know what makes her happy. Mother's Day is about making your mom happy and showing her the love and respect she deserves.
To all the mothers out there, and especially to my own mom, happy Mother's Day! XOXO
P.S. To all the husbands out there, your wife may not be your mother, but she is the mother of your children. So this applies to you too!
