The Dilemma: I just saw the episode where you spoke about shaving your face. I get a bad reaction from waxing, and tweezing is such a pain. I was wondering how you do this. Do you use a certain razor or cream? How do you prevent ingrown hairs, and does the hair grow back worse? And do you do it every day? It's hard being a woman! Can you help this one out? —Karizma
Caroline's Ruling: This is too funny! I can't believe how one simple statement can cause such a stir.
The answer to your question is yes, I do shave my face.
About ten years ago, my sister went for a facial, and when she came home, she said the technician had really beautiful skin. She was an older woman, and when my sister asked what she did to maintain her skin, she told her that she'd been shaving her face for many, many years. I decided to give it a try and have been doing it ever since.
I'm not an especially hairy person, and I don't need to shave my legs more than once every two to three weeks, so I'm lucky in that department. I've never had an issue with ingrown hairs, etc. That's just me, though. Everyone is different, so don't take my word as gospel.
Generally I use a regular razor. No special brand—whatever you use for your legs is fine. I don't "lather" my face, as a man would do; I just use whatever is in the shower. It could be body wash, baby oil, soap, anything, but I never put the razor to my face without something on it.
I start just below my eyes and shave my entire face and throat. It exfoliates all the dead skin. I went for a microdermabrasion about a year ago, and the technician was very impressed with the fact that barely any dead skin came off. I told her about my shaving routine and she said it's working, so there you go!
