How to Find Your Prince Charming
Caroline Manzo puts the real in The Real Housewives of New Jersey, and her fans relate to the reality star's no-nonsense attitude, focus on family and, above all, abundant common sense. Check back at Glo every Monday as Caroline helps solve your most pressing dilemmas.
The Dilemma: I'm a 27-year-old professional young woman, having just finished my Master's degree. I have a successful career, a loving family and amazing friends. I keep busy by going to the gym and volunteering. The trouble is, I can't seem to find a nice normal guy who has a decent job and won't cheat on me. What's your advice for finding a nice, handsome (Italian!) guy who treats his mom like gold? —Annabelle
Caroline's Ruling: Prince Charming—we all want one, don't we? There's only one problem: He doesn't exist! There is no "perfect" guy out there and, on the flip side, there isn't a "perfect" girl, either. I want you to do me a favor—drop the criteria for a minute. If someone came into your life who wasn't handsome or Italian, but who made you laugh, had a great job and loved his mother, would you dismiss him as a possible partner? I certainly hope not.
When someone fills your heart with happiness, regardless of his physical appearance, he can become beautiful in your eyes. Don't judge a book by its cover. Remember that looks fade over time, yet real beauty is inner beauty and shines forever.
While it's nice to have a partner who shares the same ethnic background as you, don't allow it to be a deal-breaker if he doesn't. What you should look for is someone who shares the same core values as you: What is he looking for in life, family, career, religion; what does the role of husband, wife, mom and dad represent to him; etc. Expand the playing field by opening your mind, and give yourself a chance to get to know someone before you shut him out over his looks or ethnicity.
You can have your Prince Charming, but understand that he is going to have some flaws, just as you do. That's what makes us human—we're not perfect, but we can find someone who is perfect for us. So maybe he isn't Italian; big deal. Maybe he isn't tall dark and handsome; so what? If he makes you laugh, loves you to death, treats you with respect and is loyal as the day is long, then JACKPOT!
I do believe there is a “perfect” someone out there for you, Annabelle. You're young and intelligent, with the love of good friends and family. That's a pretty solid foundation to build a life on. Give it time and broaden your wish list—you may find out that the love of your life is everything you never looked for!
