The Dilemma: I've befriended a really wonderful gentleman who is 11 years older than me and, after forming a trust that friends create over time, he shared with me that he suffers from two debilitating chronic conditions. We have really inspiring talks and share a lot in common (as I too suffer from a chronic illness). The more I'm with him, the more I find myself falling in love with him. I would really like to tell him how I feel, but fear the risk of losing a friendship. —Angie
Caroline's Ruling: I can understand your hesitation, Angie, but keeping your feelings bottled up inside will only complicate your relationship and may ultimately cause permanent damage.
There's a fine line between friendship and love. They're both built on compatibility, similar interests, mutual respect and affection. You share laughter, tears and your deepest thoughts with each other. You're each other's "go to" person, the one you can count on to always be there when you're in need.
