How to Emotionally Support Divorcing Parents
Realize that your family dynamic has shifted and that your relationship with your parents has changed. Try to resist the urge to become the parent. Decisions will have to be made and, although you can counsel your mom and dad, the ultimate choice in how things should be handled is theirs alone. Uncomfortable conversations about real estate, wills, money, investments, etc. are bound to come up, but don't get too involved. Suggest professional help and be a shoulder to cry on through the difficult times.
Also, try to have fun with teaching them survival skills! Teach your dad how to cook or do laundry and help him make his new house a home. Give your mom a makeover. Take the time to do lunches, dinners, shopping and movies with each of them individually. Remember: They may not be together, but they always need to know that you're still a very big part of their lives.
