  • So I'm still crazy around food. If I'm eating my weighed-and-measured no-sugar, no-white-flour portion, woe to anyone whose hand comes between my mouth and my fork. I'm not cured. I'm recovering, one day at a time. One wrong bite, and I know I'd spin out of control again.

    Along the way, my husband became my ex-husband, for reasons unrelated to my addiction or recovery. Which means I'm back in the wonderful world of dating.

    I'm nervous about someone new witnessing my oh-so-specific eating habits. Dressing on the side. No potatoes, double vegetables. Do you have brown rice? Please bring me a to-go container. (Due to supersize restaurant portions, I divide the food and wrap up anything extra. If it's on my plate, I'll eat it.) One meal and he'll find out how compulsive I am. Who else takes an hour to eat her pound of broccoli?

    Nor can I date an active food addict, especially if he hasn't recognized his own addiction. Would a recovering alcoholic start a relationship with an active alcoholic? I don't mind if you drink, mainline sugar, scarf entire pizzas, or think mixed vegetables consist of french fries combined with onion rings and sweet potato chips, but I don't want to date you.

    If we aim to be healthy, what and how we eat contributes to our health—or lack thereof. Bad eating habits can lead to high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, which in turn can lead to diabetes, heart attacks, strokes and other ailments. I've already survived my own health catastrophe. I don't really want to be nursemaid for (or widow of) a new significant other. So how a prospective beau eats becomes something I notice.
