It sounds obvious, but actively noticing the positive things that have happened to you can help you think more positively. Fox suggests making a list of the good and bad events of each day. Another way of thinking about this, Fox suggests, is as a form of perspective. You can tell yourself that things aren't that bad, and that will actually help you see that things aren't that bad.
For the skeptics, it should be reassuring to know that the effect of this look-on-the-bright-side attitude is longer-lasting than just in the moment. The more you notice good things, the better your brain gets at noticing good things. This is part of what Fox calls our cognitive "plasticity." We can rewire our brains to get better at seeing the silver lining. I tried this over the last week. At first, it may feel dorky. (Do you really need to write down that you had a good salad for lunch?) But after a few days, you'll find your list of positive things getting longer.
