As if finding figure-flattering fashionable clothes wasn't tricky enough, our bodies often change throughout our lives in unexpected ways. Whether it's aging, pregnancy, a new exercise regimen or even a serious illness, learning to adapt to these physical transformations isn't always easy. Here, seven women share their firsthand experiences and reveal how they learned to dress their changing body with confidence and style.

"I'm usually about 10 pounds heavier for at least a year and a half after having a baby, so during that post-partum time, I get really excited about shoes. I may be still wearing my maternity clothes, but my feet are still looking good! After my second child was born, I bought bright red patent leather peep-toe flats, and I felt great in them. Everyone was looking at my shoes, not my belly." —Kristen, 38

"After I graduated from college, my dad recommended I get tested for the BRCA gene mutation, since my mom had passed away from breast cancer. The test came back positive for BRCA 1 and when I had my first MRI screening at 25, they found a tumor in my right breast. I had chemotherapy then decided to have a double mastectomy. All my breast tissue was removed and tissue expanders were put in to prepare me for reconstruction. It was painful and I'd lost hair from chemo, so I was feeling really unattractive—and it was challenging to maintain my style when I had these things in my chest that were never the same size from week to week! I looked for baggier tops with cinched waists to de-emphasize my bust. I wore this flowing, soft peasant top a lot—it wasn't form-fitting, but it was feminine and still stylish." —Cara, 27
