Get a Leg Up1 of 11
By Brienne Walsh
Whether sheer or opaque, matte or metallic, patterned or plain, the right tights or stockings can help smooth and lengthen the look of legs—and just in time for the holiday party season. Check out the latest gam-enhancing trends from the fall runway, along with our picks for getting the look.
Silver Lining2 of 11
At Chanel, models wore shimmery silver tights with classic, ladylike styles.
Get the look: Pair The Limited Liquid Metal Tights, $39, with nubby tweeds or chunky knits to balance the metallic sheen.
Detail Oriented3 of 11
Intricately patterned lace tights added interest to this gold dress-and-shoes combo at Betsey Johnson.
Get the look: In general, you should think of patterned tights as a chic statement accessory, says Cathleen Moxham, legwear designer for Hanes Hosiery. For the most flattering look, seek out tights with a simple, close-knit pattern, like Kensie Zigzag Mesh Tights, $14.
Short Stop4 of 11
At Theyskens' Theory, shorts and lightweight tights created a vibe that was both sexy and strong.
Get the look: Show some skin with semi-sheer legwear like Falke Pure Matte 50 Denier Tights, $38. (Helpful hint: Denier refers to the thickness of the fabric; more opaque tights are usually 70 denier and above.)
Footloose & Fancy5 of 11
Make any fancy dress more casual and fun with a pair of of footless tights or leggings, like these seen at Issa London
Get the look: For a two-for-one find, try the new Convert-A-Tight, $12, from Hanes. The material is designed so that you can pull it over your feet, or roll it up into a legging. "It has maximum opacity, but it's not heavy or bulky," says Moxham.
Sheer Genius6 of 11
Ultra-sheer stockings at Jason Wu complemented the classic elegance of the designs.
Get the look: If you don't want your legwear to overpower your dress, then opt for something more see-through like Spanx All The Way Pantyhose in black, $22.
Nothing But Net7 of 11
The models at Oscar de la Renta strutted down the runways in fishnet stockings paired with retro-inspired suits with lots of pattern and texture.
Get the look: To create the most flattering effect, Moxham recommends fishnets with a smaller geometric pattern. (Try Wolford Small Weave Fishnet Hose, $46.) Keep things sophisticated with a structured pencil skirt that hits at the knee.
Match Point8 of 11
Various shades of tights showed up on the runway with shoes and clothes to match, as with this monochromatic outfit at Cacharel.
Get the look: Lengthen legs with a simple suede shoe and matte, opaque tights in the same shade (the similar textures will help create a smooth, clean line from hip to toe). If baby blue is a bit too girly for you, try a deep, earthy shade like this pair of Gap tights, $9, in oxblood.
Black Out9 of 11
City-slickers can take inspiration from the opaque black tights seen at DKNY.
Get the look: Truly opaque tights combine fashion and function, keeping legs warm on icy winter days. Try Donna Karan Signature Lux 90 Denier Tights, $20, for maximum coverage.
Welcome, Matte10 of 11
A Nicole Farhi, a tights in matte fabrics and slightly off-black shades complemented a neutral palette of hunter greens, coppery bronzes, black and white.
Get the look: To tone down an embellished black dress, seek out shine-free, opaque tights (like these by Commando) in shades of navy, charcoal gray or eggplant.
White Hot11 of 11
At Marni, a flash of white tights was right in line with the show's sleek silhouettes and color-blocked layers.
Get the look: Naturally, white tights don't have the same slimming powers that black ones do, which means this is a good time to buck the runway example and go monochromatic with an all white look. On your legs, opt for ASOS 80 Denier Opaque Tights in Winter White, $11; the off-white shade will be less severe than a true, bright white.
